Fee and Stuart questions for Bib 446

Part One, due Week 2   (30 points)

1)In the introduction chapter, Fee and Stuart explain the  interpretive process a bit differently than your teacher did in class Week 1 (Your teacher introduced you to "Three Worlds" theory).  Summarize (maybe in brief outline) the process as Fee and Stuart describe it, and compare/contrast it with  three worlds theory.  Which is most helpful, and why?

2)In the section  in Chapter 5  (p, 102) called "inclusion," Fee and Stuart introduce literary devices inclusion (Your teacher probably called it "inclusio") and chiasm.  Summarize these two devices in your own words, and give any examples you can think of (or Google online) from any source: Bible, movies, literature, etc.

3)From  the Chapter 7 section "A Final, Very Important Word" on pp. 150-153, summarize the idea of Kingdom. It would help to also incorporate learnings from Kraybill  (pp. 16-20) and class discussions.  Draw your own symbol/sign/illustration which for you helps you visualize the concept of "Kingdom" and explain it in a sentence or two (Note: this will also help prepare you for your signature paper, for which you have to create a symbol that expressed your thesis).

4)Discuss an interesting learning from anywhere in Fee/Stuart so far, and suggest any way that learning might helpful in your daily life, and in the field of  nursing or health care administration.

Part Two, due Week  3 (20 points)

1. Respond in a paragraph to the "Matters of Gender" section on pp. 54-55.  Does the practice of using more inclusive language seem an important issue?  Silly?  Once, a woman testified in church that she had "crucified her old man," based on an older translation in which that phrase  meant putting to death (symbolically)  her old, pre-Christian self.  If you ask anyone under 20 years of age, they will almost certainly misunderstand.  Asking a female under 20 how they feel about the Scripture that says, "Christ died for all men" will surely make them ask "What about the women?"  Talk about how these two examples of language change help (or not) you see the importance of language.

2)If you have experience with the Bible, share which translation you have been raised with and prefer.  Where might it fit on the spectrum discussed in this chapter?  If the Bible is new to you, what (if anything) have you heard about various translations (besides what you have learned in this chapter)?

3)In a few sentences, rate the helpfulness of this chapter.  Include a specific example or section that you found helpful (or not).

Part Three, due Week 6 (30 points)

1)From the section on "imprecatory psalms" in Chapter 7 (pp 228-230), and incorporating any teachings from Week 5's class, summarize and respond as to how the fact that imprecatory psalms are in the Bible (As someone has said, "There are a lot of unbiblical thoughts in the Bible.") makes you feel and any way this affects or challenges your view of Scripture.

2)Choose any one of the types of psalms (beginning on p. 219 of Chapter 7) and discuss how this type might be helpful to the field of nursing or health care administration.

3) This question only is OPTIONAL, because we made reading of Ch 6 optional  Highlight two sections of Chapter 6 H (note: web link previously had  a typo that said chapter 5) that are either helpful or confusing in understanding the Book of Acts, or interpreting the Bible in general.

4)Comment  (summarize, review or critique) in some detail (1-2 paragraphs) on Chapter 4's point 5 (pp. 87-88).  Note this is the only section of Fee and Stuart that mentions the book of Philemon (the subject of our signature paper), so include a comment about understanding the historical world of Philemon.
